The Club

Effingham Golf club is a traditional members' club – run by the members, for the members. But an essential part of its tradition is to extend a warm welcome to guests and visitors alike, both to the course and to its elegant Georgian clubhouse.

The elevated 6597 yard course sits on the North Downs and was designed by the renowned golf course architect Harry S Colt. It features two well separated loops of 9 holes. It’s rare to find a stray ball from one fairway on another. The chalk subsoil is free-draining and, barring appalling weather, we are able to offer year round golf when other courses are unplayable or not enjoyable. 7 black tees extend the length of the course to 6800 yards. The breaks in the greens mystify many.

In 2011 we commissioned leading golf architects Mackenzie and Ebert to design a memorable 18th hole which would finish with the listed 1770 Georgian clubhouse as its backdrop. 

We were pleased to extend Mackenzie and Ebert’s remit to review the other 16 holes to see how we could enhance the playing experience for golfers of all abilities while retaining the special characteristics which make up a ‘Colt’ course. Their review report now forms the basis for our strategic course development plan.

In 2012, we partnered with MJ Abbott, the UK’s leading golf course construction company, to deliver this first phase of work and to bring our irrigation system bang up to date. The excellence of Abbott’s work has delighted us and our visitors.

Our dual starting system, alternately using the front 9 and back 9, means there’s no need to book tee times at Effingham except on competition days. The regular opening hours of our Half-way House mean that the hungry golfer can rely on the availability of hot and cold, sweet and savoury food and drinks in the middle of a round. At the end of a game, the Club House sits invitingly, offering a great selection of fresh food and drink.
